 Comments

Comment: Wilson & Reeder (2005) accepted the subspecies Lepus othus tschuktschorum Nordquist, 1883, but noted 'more work is required to determine whether Eastern Siberian populations are linked to L. othus or L. timidus'. Waltari et al. (2004) found that 'Chukotkan, tundra-associated hares' [= tschuktschorum] are more closely related to L. timidus. NOTE that IF Lepus othus Merriam 1900 and Lepus timidus Linnaeus 1758 are kept as separate species, AND IF tschuktschorum Nordquist 1883 is placed in L. othus (either as a subspecies or a general synonym), it would take priority over L. othus and would need to be used for the species name, as Lepus tschuktschorum Nordquist, 1883
