  Comment: Remsen et al. (2005) comment on the status of Megaceryle Kaup 1848 in their developing South American Check-List as follows: "Megaceryle torquata and M. alcyon have been placed in the genus Ceryle in many classifications (e.g., Meyer de Schauensee 1970, AOU 1983, 1998), but most classifications have followed Fry (1980) in restricting Ceryle to Old World C. rudis (e.g., Sibley & Monroe 1990, Fry & Fry 1992, Woodall 2001). Data to support either treatment are minimal." They there list "Megaceryle torquata Ringed Kingfisher" and "Megaceryle alcyon Belted Kingfisher" as current valid names  
    Despite the apparent retention of Megaceryle Kaup, 1848 (TSN 178105) as a subgenus of Ceryle Boie, 1828 (TSN 178118) the AOU 45th supplement (2004) includes this conditional note "The subgenus Megaceryle is often (e.g., Fry 1980, Fry and Fry 1992, Woodall 2001) considered to be a distinct genus"
