  Comment: The taxonomy of Plantago maritima and its close allies is confused (Ross, 1970); var. californica occurs in North America, var. juncoides occurs in Greenland to Russia but is taxonomic status is unclear (Nilsson, 2005), ssp. serpentina occurs in Europe but the systematic status of European varieties has not been investigated (Nilsson, 2005)
