  Comment: Although Mugil gaimardianus Desmarest 1831 was placed on the Official Index of Rejected and Invalid Specific Names in Zoology (Opinion 1878), Nichiro et al. (2003) argue that it is a distinct species from M. curema Valenciennes 1836, under which it had been previously synonymized. It appears that the species they call M. gaimardianus Desmarest 1831 is in need of a new name, so until one is published, ITIS will retain M. gaimardianus as valid
