  Comment: Greuter et al. (2000) note the type genus, Sphaeria Haller, as a taxonomic synonym of the genus Hypoxylon Bull., which Myconet, 2001 (Outline of Ascomycota, vol. 7) places the family Xylariaceae Tul. & C. Tul. Therefore ITIS tentatively is placing Sphaeriaceae Fr. in synonymy under Xylariaceae Tul. & C. Tul.
