  Comment: Eschmeyer (online Catalog of Fishes, 2002) notes that Heterodontus japonicus Maclay and Macleay, 1884 is "Probably not technically available for use with this authorship, secondarily preoccupied by and apparently the same as Heterodontus japonicus [Cestracion philippi japonicus] (Duméril 1865) [following existing usage might allow continued dating to Maclay & Macleay 1884]." Of the Duméril name, Eschmeyer notes notes that this name "Predates Cestracion japonicus Maclay & Macleay 1884; a petition to suppress this name made by Taylor 1971:107 apparently has not been acted on by the ICZN. Current usage favors continued use of authorship as Maclay & Macleay 1884. Apparently an unneeded new name for Cestracion zebra Gray 1831." Given the predominance Maclay and Macleay's usage as valid, ITIS will follow this interpretation until the problem is resolved in the literature
