According to A.M. Clark 1993: 188, 'A subgenus of Astropecten. Type species: Astropecten (Astropus) longipes Gray. Type locality 'Isle of France' (Mauritius). Assumed by Sladen (1889: 389) followed by Doderlein (1917) to be conspecific with Asterias longipes Retzius, 1805 making this a synonym of Chaetaster Muller & Troschel 1840.' However, this is most likely a synonym of Archaster based on description, locality, and other aspects of Gray's description
