  Comment: Wilson & Reeder (eds., 2005) did not recognized subfamilies in the Procyonidae; similarly, Kays (2009) noted that while 'Cladistic analyses of morphological data starting in the 1980s consistently placed the genera into two subfamilies [...] two recent genetic studies that included both nuclear and mitochondrial genes told a substantially different story...'
