 Comments

Comment: The complex publication history of Indische Zoologie (Indian Zoology) complicates the correct authorship of Paradisea mangifica. The version in which magnifica appears is the second edition (1781), a Latin and German translation of Pennant's work by J.R. Forster. Forster added three plates supplied by Pennant to complete the publication (Zimmer 1926: 374-375). In the Peters Checklist (Mayr & Greenway 1962: 198), authorship is given as Pennant, 1781, with a note that the name is 'in Forster.' Richmond, however, attributed it directly to Forster (see https://www.zoonomen.net/cit/RI/SP/Pand/pand00110a.jpg). In the preface to Indische Zoologie, Forster (1781: ii) writes: 'In Descriptionibus corrigendis augendisque, ut et in conquirendis Synonymis, diligentia summa sum usus, Pennantii propositum, quaedam de Paradiseis et de Phoenice antiquorum edendi' - indicating that he expanded and corrected Pennant's descriptions from the first edition (1769, in English and French, the latter poorly translated; Zimmer 1926) and published Pennant's additional work on the Phoenix and Birds of Paradise. Accordingly, the most accurate attribution for Paradisea mangifica is Pennant in Forster, 1781
