 Comments

Comment: The number and names used as valid in the family-group ranks (superfamily to subtribe) for chiggers is apparently a matter of disagreement. Nielsen et al. (2021: 194) state 'The status of the family Walchiidae has been debated for the past 20 years. Wen (1999a, 2004) proposed that the Walchiidae be reinstated as a valid family. This has been contested by Stekolnikov (2018b, 2021). Based on the arguments of the latter author, we have removed Walchiidae as a valid family and placed the subfamily Gahrliepiinae [with tribe Walchiini] in the family Trombiculidae.' Ricardo Bassini-Silva (pers. comm., emails July-August 2021) indicated he supports using 3 families, Leeuwenhoekiidae, Trombiculidae and Walchiidae (but see comment on Gahrliepiinae!), and no subdivisions between family and genus
