 Comments

Comment: Tibicininae Distant 1905 (and the coordinated tribe and subtribe names with the same authorship) is based upon the generic name Tibicina, not on Tibicen, which was the type genus for a different family-group name established by Van Duzee in 1916. These are not homonymous even though the stem for both names should have been identical (Tibicin-) since the latter was originally misspelled Tibicenidae and is in prevailing usage with that spelling. The latter is now placed in subfamily Cicadinae, where it is junior to Cicadinae & Cryptotympanini
Distant (1905) simultaneously established 'Subfam. Tibicininae,' and within it 'Division Tettigadesaria' (corresponding to tribal rank). In this situation, under ICZN Art. 24.1, 'the name proposed at higher rank takes precedence,' so the family name Tettigadinae Distant 1905 is a junior synonym of Tibicininae Distant 1905
