  Comment: As of 14 December 2009, the 'bay checkerspot Butterfly' (Euphydryas editha bayensis) is listed as Threatened under the U.S. Endangered Species Act  
    Emmel et al. (1998:17-18) researched the potential types of Euphydryas editha (Boisduval, 1852) (originally "Melitaea Editha"), designate a lectotype, and restrict the type locality to "Twin Peaks, San Francisco, San Francisco County, California." The type locality of E. editha bayensis Sternitzky, 1937 (orginally "Euphydryas editha var. bayensis") is a few miles to the south, "Hillsborough, San Mateo Co., Calif." Emmet et al. note that "the tree syntypes fall well within the range of phenotypical variation shown by the San Francisco Bay area subspecies of E. editha that was renamed bayensis by Sternitzky," and declare that "E. e. bayensis is thus a junior synonym of nominotypical E. editha"
