  Comment: Originally described as Lumbricus gordioides by Hartmann (1821), this taxon was later placed in the genus Haplotaxis, as its type species, by Hoffmeister (1843, p. 97); Kathman and Brinkhurst (1998 - citation in this account) recommend that this taxon be referred to as Haplotaxis cf. gordioides because no mature specimens have yet been described from specimens collected in North America; this species is considered to be Holarctic in distribution
