  Comment: Some sources recognize distinct subspecies of Megaptera novaeanglia; the Society for Marine Mammalogy's List of Marine Mammal Species and Subspecies (2023) recognizes M. n. kuzira (Gray, 1850) and M. n. australis (Lesson, 1828) along with the typical variety. Jim Mead (pers. comm., 19 Apr 2019) recommended treating those subspecies as junior synonyms of the species
