  Comment: Rice (1998:65-66) notes of Rhachianectidae Weber 1904 that "the type genus Rhachianectes Cope, 1869, is a junior synonym of Eschrichtius, so the family name is invalid because it was replaced prior to 1961 (Article 40(b) of the ICZN Code)." Eschrichtiidae Ellerman and Morrison-Scott, 1951, takes priority from 1904 under the same Article (40.2 of the 1999 edition of the ICZN)
