  Comment: Robins et al. (1980) included Stizostedion vitreum vitreum (Mitchill) ('walleye') and S. vitreum glaucum Hubbs ('blue pike') as valid subspecies, but in the 1991 edition they listed only S. vitreum, and included the comment "This species entry includes also the blue pike, variously regarded as a full species (S. glaucum), a subspecies of S. vitreum, or a color phase of vitreum. Known formerly from Lakes Erie and Ontario, [glaucum] is now believed to be extinct. Stizostedion vitreum glaucum of the previous editions of this list (see 1980 edition, p. 41) is dropped." Eschmeyer (online Catalog of Fishes, 2003) treats Stizostedion Rafinesque 1820 as a junior synonym of Sander Oken 1817
