 Comments

Comment: Blainville (1835:293) coined the name 'C.[oluber] (Zacholus) zonatus,' but the description is considered by most to be inadequate for definite assignment to a species, and to have been so when it was originally coined; the type specimen was apparently lost by the 1880s. Lockington (1876:52-53) described 'Bellophis zonatus nov. sp.' and said it was 'very probably the same species' as Blainville's, and 'for this reason I have preserved his specific name of zonatus.' There has been disagreement about whether or not this constitutes a homonymy, but Smith and Taylor (1945:84-85) argue that since the names cannot be said to clearly apply to different species, they should not be considered homonyms, and that based on the handling of similar cases in ICZN Opinion 126 (from the 1930s, see p.485), authorship for the currently-recognized species should be given as Lapropeltis zonatus (Lockington ex Blainville, 1876). This view was followed by Zweifel (1974:174.2), as well
