 Comments

Comment: First, note that all but one (V. fulleri) of the species presently in the genus Varichaetadrilus (as of late 2012) had originally been described in other genera (e.g., Limnodrilus, Psammoryctides, Tubifex, or Varichaeta). The genus Varichaeta was erected by Brinkhurst in 1981 to separate taxa in the genus Isochaetides (at that time), based upon lengths of vasa deferentia. After discovering that the name Varichaeta was preoccupied (Varichaeta Speiser, 1903 in Diptera), Brinkhurst and Kathman (1983) established the name Varichaetadrilus for the three known species at that time: Varichaetadrilus pacificus (Brinkhurst, 1965) new combination (type species), Varichaetadrilus nevadana (Brinkhurst, 1965) new combination, and Varichaetadrilus israelis (Brinkhurst, 1965) new combination (a non-North American species). In this same paper, they described a new species to science, Varichaetadrilus fulleri Brinkhurst & Kathman, 1983, and revised the description of Varichaetadrilus pacificus (Brinkhurst, 1965) to include the bifidus form
