 Comments

Comment: Although variously attributed to Ellis 1918 (p.49, 'Pterodrilus durbini Ellis in ed.', Harvard copy stamped Apr 3 1918, table of contents claims 'issued March 25, 1918') or Ellis 1919 (p.254, 'Pterodrilus durbini, new species', published May 2, 1919), the name clearly must date to the earlier work, since the name is given and the key provides sufficient information for a basic description. Since the 1918 work attributes the name to 'Ellis in ed.', the author was clearly aware of his own contemporaneous work that sought to name, typify, and describe the species in detail, so under ICZN Art. 72.4.1 & 72.4.1.1 (and the interesting example thereunder), the type series consists of all the specimens included under the same name in the two works. The 1919 work then effectively lectotypifies the name as given, and provides a more detailed redescription, and so on
