  Comment: Although Thorington et al. (2012:74-75) list Sciurus vulgaris fuscoater Altum 1876 and not S. v. cinerea Hermann 1804, the senior name should have been used for these synonymized subspecies. Thorington (pers. comm., 12 Nov 2013 email) agrees that 'Sciurus vulgaris cinerea is a valid subspecies of Sciurus vulgaris, and S. v. fuscoater should be listed as a junior synonym of S. v. cinerea'
