The International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature (2015, Opinion 2373) formally suppressed the name Actinotrocha Müller, 1846 (and its type species, Actinotrocha branchiata Müller, 1846) and placed it on the Official Index of Rejected and Invalid Generic Names in Zoology, in favor of Phoronis Wright, 1856. Traditionally, Actinotrocha was used for larval forms, while Phoronis was used for adult forms, and although those larval/adult forms were not connected as representing the same taxa initially, most such connections have subsequently been established. Without formal action (through the ICZN or in publications), all this means the senior not-suppressed Phoronis or Phoronopsis combinations should respectively be used for all species of the Phoronida, based on nomenclatural seniority among each set of synonyms. Referring to larval forms should be distinguished in text, rather than by using a different name or combination, such that only one binomen is used for each species |
