  Comment: Stejneger (1885) argued that Wilson (1811 - see note on Sylvia pinus Wilson, 1811) was not describing the Pine warbler, but was trying to restrict pinus to Catesby's 1751 illustration of the Pine Warbler. Stejneger argued restricting to Catesby was wrong, following Baird (1858) that pinus was referent to the Blue-winged Warbler. Therefore, the Pine Warbler needed a name and the next available was Audubon's Sylvia vigorsii, Dendroica vigorsii is a subsequent combination
