 Comments

Comment: Cutler & Cutler (1990:719) argued that the more often used name Phascolosoma scolops (Selenka and de Man 1883) (originally in Phymosoma) should be used over the less-used but senior name Phascolosoma carneum Leuckart and Rüppell 1828. In spite of their arguments (i.e., to preserve nomenclatural stability and avoid confusion), we follow the Code and let priority dictate Phascolosoma carneum as the appropriate name for this taxon. A petition to the ICZN would be required to do otherwise
Authorship is variously given as Leuckart and Rüppell in Rüppell 1828 or Rüppell and Leuckart in Rüppell 1828. This discrepancy has not yet been investigated for ITIS
Note that while ICZN Opinion 1532 (1989) suppressed Sipunculus (Phymosomum) guttatus Quatrefages 1865 and placed Phymosoma scolops Selenka et al. 1883 [1884?] on the Official List of Species Names in Zoology, no mention was made of Phascolosoma carneum Leuckart and Rüppell 1828, which has priority
