Eschmeyer (online Catalog of Fishes, 2004) notes of Gymnothorax wilsoni Bloch & Schneider 1801 (the original combination) that although many recent works have used this name, it "needs more research, including the status of its 3 synonyms; a neotype or petition might be needed to continue usage in Congridae," and that Böhlke & Smith (2002) consider it a "nomen dubium in Muraenidae." Nonetheless, he still uses it as a current name
