  Comment: Robins et al. (1991) note of Mugil gyrans that "L. R. Rivas (pers. comm.) noted that the name trichodon is correctly applied to an extralimital species and that gyrans is the first available name for the fantail mullet." Robins et al. (1980) had listed Mugil trichodon as the fantail mullet
