Whitehead et al. (1988) lists Anchoviella miarcha (Jordan and Gilbert, 1882) as a "nominal species certainly or probably [not belonging] in Anchoviella," and note that "the types are lost and the name is best regarded as a nomen dubium (Nelson, 1983)." Therefore ITIS is tentatively placing this name (and its original combination) in synonymy under the subfamily Engraulinae
