  Comment: Baryshnikov and Abramov (1997) proposed Neovison as a subgenus of Mustela under the belief that subgenus Mustela (Vison) Gray, 1843 could not be used for North American mink/weasels; Abramov (2000) elevated Vison to generic status. However, Harding & Smith (2009:639) argue that Vison can be applied to this group, and has priority if Mustela vison, M. frenata, M. felipei, and M. africana are recognized to comprise a genus separate from Mustela. Since Harding & Smith also argued that additional studies should be undertaken before taking this action, ITIS is currently recognizing both the New World and Old World radiations of Mustela in genus Mustela pending further research
