Originally named in a Danish language publication as 'Nymphon Strömii' (with footnote: Bed Artsnavnet har jeg ikke villet udtrykke nogen Oberbeviisning om, at det er denne Art, Ström har afbildet; men fun tilbagekalde ham i Frindring fom Pyknogonidernes Opdager). This would likely be for Hans Strøm (1726-1797), a prominent Norwegian zoologist and naturalist (summary per Wikipedia). If so, the name is not based on a 'German' word, so the correction for the umlaut per ICZN Art. 32.5.2.1 would yield stromii. However, that Article concludes that 'if there is any doubt that the name is based upon a German word, it is to be so treated.' In this case there is no conclusive evidence in the work, so it must be treated as a German word, so the correct name would be stroemii. Some workers have dropped the second i and used stroemi, although that should be considered an incorrect subsequent spelling, as many workers do recognize that it was originally spelled -ii (e.g., Norman 1908:214, Dogiel 1913:632, Hedgpeth 1948:190), which means Article 33.3.1 probably cannot be invoked to preserve the -i spelling |
