 Comments

Comment: Semper was the first to use a family group name based on the genus Achelia Hodge 1864 (not Wilson 1878, who cited Semper), and the name Achelidae (later corrected to Acheliidae) was apparently made available in one of two nearly identical publications, both dated to 1874. Many sources, including PycnoBase (2019) place the type genus Achelia in the family Ammotheidae Dohrn 1881, although that is junior to Achelidae. Nomenclaturally, Achelidae Sember 1874 has priority (ICZN Article 23) and must be used as the correct name for this family if Achelia is included (see Munilla & Soler-Membrives 2014:271). As of late 2019, many pycnogonid workers have not done so, but ITIS will follow the rules of nomenclature and Munilla & Soler-Membrives (2014) on this issue. The taxonomy of the group is a separate matter from the nomenclature
