 Comments

Comment: The family-group name Trichoplacidae has sometimes been credited to Bütschli and Hatschek, 1905 (which used the word Trichoplaciden in the German text, with Trichoplacidae appearing only in the index), but it appears to have been made available through an 1899 work by Haeckel (translated to English in 1900) that used the term Trichoplacidae (verified in 1900 translation, but not yet seen in 1899 original). Although that particular work doesn't mention the type genus Trichoplax, it is clear from his works in the 1890s that he discussed Trichoplciden (plural vernacular) and the genus Trichoplax, and that he used Trichoplacidae as a valid supra-generic taxon name based on Trichoplax, which is enough to make a pre-1900 name available. Pre-1900 vernacular uses could potentially have made the name available if later workers had translated it to Trichiplacidae and attributed it to the pre-1900 work (i.e., ICZN Art. 11.7.2), but there is no evidence of that having occurred
