 Comments

Comment: See comments in IPNI regarding authorship. K. Gandhi (pers. comm., May 2013) suggests the following interpretation: Berger's use of asterix (*) in the index by Gymnocalycium bodenbenderianus (sic, p.341) along with the index reference to p.221 together constitute valid publication, despite the main text clearly treating Gymnocalycium as a subgenus of Echinocactus. Therefore, under the International Code of Nomenclature for Algae, Fungi and Plants (2012) Article 36.2, Berger published E. bodenbenderianus and G. bodenbenderianus as 'alternative names' (allowed prior to 1953 only). Reference to Hill's Index Kewensis Supplement 8 (1933:105) for valid publication is therefore unnecessary. The names have equal priority, and neither is basionym for the other. See also Doweld & Greuter (2001:879-885) in Taxon 50(3)
