  Comment: Although Cactus melactoides Hoffmanns. and Melocactus melactoides (Hoffmanns.) DC. were both validly published, Taylor (1980:67) notes that the 'brief diagnosis is the only, and unsatisfactory means of typifying this name,' and after noting a number of serious issues therein, argues that 'whatever can, or cannot be read into Hoffmannsegg's writings, the fact remains that this name is inadequately typified and should be abandoned. Britton & Rose (1922), p. 235, and subsequent authors, have used C. melactoides Hoffmanns. for the plant correctly known as M. violaceus Pfeiff.' So there is no known correct application of the name, and Hunt (2006:188) simply lists the name as 'M. melactoides auctt' and refers it to M. violaceus
