  Comment: Eschmeyer (online Catalog of Fishes, and personal communication, 2003) places the type species of Cypselurus Swainson 1838 (Exocoetus appendiculatus Wood 1825) as a junior synonym of Cheilopogon heterurus (Rafinesque 1810). The current status of Cypselurus Swainson 1838 and Cheilopogon Lowe 1841 (and the species therein) remain unclear, however
