    Taxonomic placement of Macrotus is not clear. Baker et al. (2003) treated it as its own basal subfamily 'Macrotinae' in Plyllostomidae; Gardner (ed., 2008) mentioned that the subfamily name was unavailble, but did not address the current subfamily placement of the genus
