 Comments

Comment: Although Fujita's (1913) description of Ostrea ariakensis is based on a Wakiya MS name, the description satisfies ICZN articles 10 and 11 for a new species. Fujita's name should not be considered a nomen nudum as suggested by many subsequent authors who have attributed it to either Wakiya (1929) or Fujita in Wakiya (1929)
Turgeon et al. (1998) note 'Crassostrea ariakensis (Fujita, 1913) and Crassostrea sikamea (Amemiya, 1928), both Asian species, are subjects of experimental mariculture in the Pacific Northwest (see A. M. Robinson and C. J. Langdon, 1993, J. Shellfish Res. 12:150; and D. Hedgecock, M. A. Banks, and D. J. McGoldrick, 1994, J. Shellfish Res. 12:215-221, respectively), but neither species is known to have established populations in the wild'
