 Comments

Comment: Viverra maculata Gray, 1830 is a primary junior homonym of marsupial Viverra maculata Kerr, 1792 (now accepted in Dasyurus) and so is permanently invalid. A proposal to conserve the name was submitted to the ICZN, but was rejected (see International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature, 2007). The next available and potentially valid name is Genetta fieldiana Du Chaillu, 1860. Given the nomenclatural and taxonomic issues in this species, ITIS is not attempting to account for its (4?) subspecies until they are addressed in the literature
