 Comments

Comment: In 1866 when Philipi and Landbeck described the Masafuera Rayadito they misspelled the epithet, replacing the e with a c: masafucrae. Subsequent taxonomic authors spelled the name with e, masafuerae, and attributed the name to Philipi and Landbeck 1866, including Philipi (1868). A lapsus calami would justify an emendation, but there is no internal evidence within the original description to support a lapsus - the name and island are consistently spelled suggesting the authors believed the spelling was masafucrae. Some suggest prevailing usage justifies changing the original spelling to masafuerae. Per ICZN Article 33.3.1 and the ICZN glossary, to be in prevailing usage a spelling must be attributed to the publication of the original spelling and the spelling must be 'adopted by at least a substantial majority of the most recent authors concerned with the relevant taxon.' Even though masafuerae is not included in the 1866 publication (only masafucrae is), it appears masafuerae was always attributed to Philipi and Landbeck's 1866 publication. Therefore, the 'attributed' portion of ICZN Article 33.3.1 is met. Whether the spelling was adopted by most recent authors concerned with the relevant taxon is debatable, partly because the vagueness of 'prevailing usage' makes ICZN Article 33.3.1 difficult to apply. Dickinson and Christidis (2014) did not conserve masafuerae, and asserted masafucrae is the original spelling. ICZN Article 33.5 (Cases of Doubt) states if there is doubt whether a subsequent spelling is a justified emendation or incorrect subsequent spelling, it is to be treated as incorrect subsequent spelling. If Cases of Doubt is applied similarly to ICZN 33.2.1 where the choice is between correct original spelling and incorrect subsequent spelling, then the vagueness of 'prevailing usage' will seemingly always default to incorrect subsequent spelling. Therefore, Aphrastura masafuerae (Philippi & Landbeck, 1866) is an incorrect subsequent spelling
